Bobby Alloway

This Month, "Ask the Experts" caught up with custom car builder, Bobby Alloway, at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY, to talk about the Nationals, his latest creation, a ’67 Mustang Fastback, and some new projects he has in the works.

We are here at the 38th annual NSRA Street Rod Nationals; tell us what you have on display this year?
Inside at the BFGoodrich® Tires booth is our latest creation, a ’67 Mustang Fastback with a 4.6 Twin-Turbo engine that pumps out 839 hp at 8,700 rpm. The wheels are 17x6 and 20x10 inches and are finished with BFGoodrich g-Force T/A® KDW tires sizes 215/45R17s in the front and 265/50R20s in the back.

We also have a ’33 Ford Coupe in the builders showcase. The NSRA lets builders like me put our cars on display for the public to see. They are not up for any awards; however, it’s a nice way to get to showcase our work.

How did you get into the business of building cars?
I’ve been building cars for over 30 years and it’s all I know! I just like cars and our business has just grown and grown over the years. Some of us like me are just lucky to have taken a hobby and turned it into a successful business.

In the June issue of HOT ROD magazine, they refer to your Mustang as a “musclerod”. What makes this car different than some of your other creations?
The inspiration for this car came from Ford Racing’s FR500C Mustang “Boy Racer” Grand-Am Cup Car - a totally different type of car than we usually build. However, we build street rods - that’s what we know and that’s the approach we took with this car.

How important is choosing a tire when it comes to building a hot rod?
Tire choice is extremely important when building hot rods. I use BFGoodrich tires on virtually all of my custom cars. First off, I like a good rake, and this is in direct relation to tire choice, as I tend to like a good-sized piece of rubber out back. The performance of a tire is also equally as important, which is why I prefer the g-Force T/A® KDW tire.

What types of projects are in the works for you right now?
We are working on a few projects right now - a 1961 Ford Starliner with a 427 “Cammer.” Also in the shop is a build-up project, featured in Street Rodder magazine, of a ’37 Chevy Coupe equipped with BFGoodrich g-Force T/A® KDW tires. Also in the works is a 1955 Buick convertible and about a half a dozen other street rod projects.
